How to choose a sofa that earns its place in your Kampala home

Start with the walkways, not the sofa

A generous sofa can still make a living room feel smaller if it blocks the route from the door to the dining area or balcony. Before shopping, mark the proposed sofa footprint on the floor with masking tape or newspaper. Leave roughly 75 to 90 cm for the paths people use most.

Match the layout to how your household gathers

A straight three-seater with two accent chairs gives a flexible, airy arrangement for smaller sitting rooms. An L-shape works best when one long wall is clear and the room is used for relaxed television time. For a formal lounge, two facing sofas make conversation feel natural and leave the centre open for a coffee table.

• Choose a chaise or sectional when one corner can carry the visual weight.

Choose fabric for the life the sofa will live

For busy homes, medium tones and textured weaves are more forgiving than very pale, smooth fabrics. If children, visitors or pets use the room daily, ask about a fabric that can be spot-cleaned and choose removable cushions where possible.

Colour matters in Kampala's bright daylight. Look at a fabric near a window rather than only under showroom lights. Warm sand, clay, olive and charcoal tones sit well with most floor finishes and do not show everyday dust as quickly as cream.
